Character Name: Desire of the Endless

Username: [personal profile] epithumia

Original Character, Canon, or Alternate Universe: The Sandman, taken from after the events of Volume Seven; Destruction has left completely, and Dream has spilt family blood. It wasn't Desire's fault.

Played By: Omahyra Mota.

Concept: Something you crave.

Physical Description: They are of an average height and slender frame, and usually depicted as an androgyne being with white skin, black hair, and yellow eyes. In this incarnation, their skin is darker, but retains some other consistencies. They cast two shadows -- one that is dark and sharply defined, and another that is hazy and wavery. This is their preferred and default state of being, but can flux and shift in appearance dependent on tapping into the desires of others they interact with.

History: Here.

World: The world from which the Endless come from is practically every known universe, where all the gods reside, where all beings of fiction and fantasy have existed, if not in one realm, than another. The focal point is an Earth very much like our own, but magic exists, and the legends are true, and strangeness lurks beneath a veil as thin as cobweb.

Talents/Abilities:

Emotional manipulation: 10/10. Desire lives in the heart. They know what you crave. They know how to make you crave. The only real limit, here, is that all forms of manipulation are based in desire as opposed to ruling all spectrum of emotion, but desire touches on so many.

Omnipresence and Teleportation: 9/10, ordinarily a 10/10, but as Desire (as an embodiment) is currently restricted to the realm of Juncture, this nerfs their ability somewhat. Otherwise, Desire goes where there is desire, and although they may not appear in material form, they are there at each twinge, each ache, each impulse. They are also currently restricted from their realm, but as was true of Destruction's absence, this doesn't mean desire as a concept has ceased to function elsewhere, it's just out of their hands.

Immortality: 10/10. Their physical body may be destroyed, but it will only be remade as a result. In Juncture, the human form they have been bound to is trapped by the restrictions of the plane, but Desire exerts control over it easily -- they have plenty of practice manipulating their own form, after all, what difference does flesh and blood present? It may just take a little practice, initially. Their weakness would lie in ancient magics that deal in ancient concepts, and those that know how to wield them correctly.

General Sorcery: 10/10. Desire can change their appearance and clothing at will, practice small acts of transmutation, and take on non-human forms. While saddled with a physical form in Juncture, they do not necessarily appear unconsciously as a witness's expectation of Desire, but can adjust themself to match it at will -- or something make themself the person's object of desire.

While Desire can exert total control over their own kingdom, the realm of mortals is not their sole domain. However, the Endless have mortals they might consider their 'children' -- the dreamers are Dream's, those about to die are in Death's arms, ones lost in their own apathy and depression are Despair's, and so on and so forth. For Desire, they are master of those lost to their own wants, and consumed by Desire. And so it is that the mortal realm is possessed by Desire at least partially -- one sixth.

Minor transmutations and conjurings are within easy grasp. Bigger things may require that victims of Desire must ardently want them, and Desire themself must expend effort to see it to fruition. These changes may shatter or be destroyed if hearts are changed. (This part is hard to explain -- large scale magics will be run by staff and explained in specific at the time, and can be vetoed, as Desire is not as detailed in canon as some of their siblings.)

Combat: ?/10. They are a lover, not a fighter. But they can love you to death.

Personality: Desire of the Endless is the anthropomorphic personification of desire as a human quality, and their personality is largely defined by it as seems to be a theme for the youngest of the Endless -- while Death, Dream, Destiny, and Destruction retain their own sense of individuality removed of their realms, Desire, Despair, and Delirium embody their qualities physically and mentally.

Like desire itself, Desire is fickle, cruel, and self-serving. Much like the other younger Endless, they take enjoyment in playing games with humanity as well as their other siblings, as seen in the relationship they maintain with Dream. The closest they came to both engineering Dream's destruction as well as his personal wrath was when they raped a comatose woman so that when Dream would be forced to murder her progeny (for unrelated plottish reasons) and thus, his own blood, the Furies would be brought down upon him in accordance to ancient rules. Desire displays no desire to atone for this wrong, only heeding Dream's warnings to stay out of his affairs.

For Desire lives in the moment, often forgetting quickly the lessons that could be learned, only occasionally letting future consequence give them pause. Their anger is sharp and needling, their delight is often sadistic in nature and sharp edged, and they pick at uncomfortable truths in others just to watch the unraveling. Of the other Endless, they are not the strongest, and can be silenced to stopped when threatened by them.

For all these qualities that make Desire an antagonist, they also have penchants for things like emotional wisdom -- like the other Endless, they have a deep-seated understanding of their own quality as well as the opposites of it. This means they have the capacity to focus or redirect the actions of others, if not through their own abilities, then through their words. They lie, mainly, to hide their own machinations -- they tell the truth more often than not as a greater tool and weapon to antagonise or offer kindness.

They can be contradictory, and fallible in this way -- although they had schemed to force Dream's destruction, they fear it as well when it came to be beyond their own design. Desire is still learning their place in the cosmos, still learning that humanity is less their plaything so much as they are humanity's, and the winds of change -- Delirium's transformations, Destruction's departure, Dream's impending doom -- has made them thoughtful.

But to change meaningfully is also to be destroyed -- Desire is desire, whatever you like, and when you least expect it.

Sexuality: Sexuality plays an important role in Desire's realm, and as for Desire themself, they are not bound to labels and spectrum, one as amorphous and changeable as the other. That does not mean that gender and sexual orientation are meaningless -- they mean a great deal to others, and thus, are valuable tools and amusing playthings for Desire.

Reason for playing: Desire is a character I've considered writing for some time, and Juncture's set up seems like it has enough versatility and depth to allow an Endless to be RPed here. This character will also allow me to write about more mystical themes than my other two characters, who are more grounded and material and ordinary. Due to the scale of their powers, Desire will not always be a frequent participator of mundane RP (although will not be excluded from it either), but can enable plot events and mystical occurrences and generate RP through magical machinations.

Object: Lay it on me.

▲ WRITING SAMPLES

Sample one;

They are walking through the caverns of their home, traversing barefoot down arteries as large as the grand hallways of palaces. In the desert, the Threshold of Desire stands as a figure of themself, hands reaching for a galactic sky with clouds gathered around its knees, a heart of crystal exposed in vivisection, impossibly large and impossibly grand. Desire, prowling the bounds of this realm, reaches an eye the size of a cathedral, and their feet lift, drifting effortlessly through the white.

They are home.

But this is a lie. The unreality of the dream begins to come apart at the seams, and between the cracks, there is darkness. Brother, Desire implores, brother, attend me-- Dream, don't, you stubborn little prick--! and they are reaching as if they could cling with their hands to the vestiges of this mortal sleep, but the gaps only widen, and they become the dim room, the bed beneath their back, the warm body at their side who is creeping a hand beneath the blankets, rousing.

Desire grips this wandering appendage and squeezes, and the man lets out a hiss of pain. "Sorry, jeeze. You looked like you were having a bad--"

"Don't say it." In the darkness, their tawny eyes are wrathful, before gentling suddenly, as if molten gold had turned to honey, and they smile. "Light a candle."

The man does as he is told, discreetly checking that his knuckles aren't bruised, picking up the candlestick rested at the bedside, fumbling with matches to touch flame to wick. He turns back as Desire leans forward to burn the end of a cigarette in the little finger of fire, before rolling their way out of bed. Darkness swathes their body and seems to form to fabric, silent foot steps heading for the door, and the man has it in his throat to protest.

But the fire. The fire is more beautiful than even his companion. It's the most lovely thing he has ever seen. Entranced, he lets hot wax patter against the edge of his hand, and he can feel a dull arousal stirring low in his gut. Alone, he gently, reverently, trails the candle along where Desire had been laying, letting blankets and sheets catch aflame in a sudden skin-peeling heat.

The windows glow golden by the time Desire has reached the end of the street, flicking aside half-spent cigarette.

Sample two;

A Dear Mun entry.
